Upgrading the shock absorbers on a NIU or Segway scooter can noticeably improve comfort, control and stability. For riders who want a more adjustable setup, we generally recommend a shock absorber with an external reservoir, often called an air-tube or piggyback shock absorber.

Why choose a shock absorber with an external reservoir?
An external reservoir gives the damper more oil and gas volume, which can improve heat management and provide more consistent damping during repeated bumps. Depending on the model, it can also provide more adjustment options. The correct spring rate, damping, travel and installation are still essential; an external reservoir alone does not make every shock suitable for every scooter.
Choosing rear shock absorbers
Rear shock absorbers are normally selected using two measurements:
- Length: measure from the centre of the upper mounting point to the centre of the lower mounting point.
- Mounting type: the end can use a round eye mount or a fork mount. A round upper mount with a fork at the bottom is listed as Fork on our product page.

Choosing front shock absorbers
For the front suspension, the tube or cylinder diameter describes how wide the suspension tube is where it fits the front fork or steering assembly. Common examples are:
- NIU N-Series / N1S: 31 mm
- Segway E110 / E125: 31 mm
- Segway E300: 33 mm
A larger-diameter suspension tube is generally more rigid and can support larger internal components, but diameter alone does not determine comfort. Damping design, spring rate, travel and adjustment range are equally important. If you want to increase the diameter substantially—even to a specialist 46 mm setup—the complete front fork or steering assembly must support that diameter.
Front suspension and brake compatibility
When upgrading the front shock absorber, plan to replace the front brake or caliper as well. Many performance front suspension units use a different brake-caliper mounting pattern or adapter, so the original brake may not fit the new suspension.
Choose a compatible brake and mounting adapter for the selected shock absorber. Brake work is safety-critical: confirm disc diameter, caliper position, hose length, wheel clearance and mounting-bolt specification before riding.
How to replace scooter shock absorbers
Support the scooter securely before removing any suspension bolts. Compare the old and new mounting width, length and bolt size before installation. Tighten all mounting hardware to the correct specification and confirm that the suspension moves freely without contacting the bodywork, wiring or brake components.
Do I need to trim the inner plastic?
On some scooters, the external reservoir can touch part of the non-structural inner plastic. A small section may need to be trimmed to provide clearance. This does not affect operation when done correctly, but always test-fit the shock first. Do not cut the frame, battery enclosure, wiring, brake lines or structural mounting points.
