YM Motor Hub Motor Series Explained
YM hub motors are among the most popular upgrade motors for electric scooters and light electric motorcycles such as NIU and Segway. The range is easiest to understand in two steps: the housing type and the motor generation.
Black Motor vs WP (Tile)
- Black Motor (plain housing) – no external cooling shroud, a single main cable and thinner magnets. Quiet and extremely energy-efficient, but with a low current limit, so not suitable for aggressive acceleration. Ideal for stock riding, delivery work and short commutes.
- WP (Tile) – cooling shroud with air ducts, multi-wire phase cabling and taller magnets. More power and far better heat dissipation. Every performance and high-power version in the range is a WP motor.
Generations at a Glance
Legacy Black Motor → TTS (entry commuter) → 6th Gen Demon → 7th Gen Demon (mainstream performance) → GT Liquid-Cooled (top-level racing)
Entry & Commuter
Legacy Black Motor
27–30H magnets, single Hall sensor, 1000–1500W at 48–72V. Low cost, silent and extremely efficient. Best for stock commuting, delivery riding and short trips – not intended for high-power controllers.
TTS Series
Compact single-layer cooling shroud for 10/12 inch wheels, available as a single-wire Eco or 4-wire Power version. 32–35H magnets with dual Hall sensors for smooth, judder-free starts. 1500–3000WP. Bolt-on fit for NIU and Segway mounting points – the best-value stock upgrade for daily riding with the occasional overtake.
Mainstream Performance
6th Gen Demon
Widened cooling shroud with an aluminium trim ring; available in single-wire Eco, 4-wire and 7-wire versions. 35–40H magnets, single Hall sensor, standard copper windings. Handles up to roughly 120A – pairs well with FarDriver ND450/ND680 controllers. Strong launch with average mid-to-top-end; can run warm under sustained full throttle. For mid-level builds and city street riding.
7th Gen Demon
Thicker, wider aluminium rim with a reinforced hub and much larger cooling ducts. Choose the 2500W Eco single-wire version for commuting, or the Racing versions with 7 thick wires (6 phase + Hall) and thicker copper. 40H magnets, dual Hall sensors across the range, upgraded bearings, double oil seals for waterproofing and double-wound windings. Handles 150–180A – pairs with FarDriver 72680/72890 controllers and stays cool under sustained hard riding without demagnetisation. The current go-to motor for serious builds, mountain roads and top-speed runs.
6th Gen vs 7th Gen – Key Differences
- Cooling: aluminium hub air ducts (7th) vs plastic shroud (6th)
- Sensors: dual Hall sensors across the 7th Gen range vs single Hall
- Wiring: 7 thick wires on high-power 7th Gen vs max 4-wire on 6th Gen
- Durability: upgraded bearings, waterproofing and magnet material on the 7th Gen
Top-Level Racing
GT Liquid-Cooled
Dual-layer cooling ducts plus external water-cooling lines on a split reinforced hub. 80H magnets and extra-thick 7-wire phase cabling. 5000–10000WP with support for 96–120V systems. Sustained maximum power without fade – requires a water-cooling kit. For track racing, drag runs and extreme builds.
13 Inch Wide-Tire
Large 13 inch hub for wide tires (130/70-13) with 7 thick wires. 5000–8000W with very strong launch torque. For heavy scooters, riding two-up, steep climbs and long-distance hard riding.
Which One Should You Choose?
- Stock commuting, delivery, maximum range: TTS single-wire Eco or Legacy Black Motor
- Moderate upgrade on a mid budget: 6th Gen Demon 4-wire WP
- Serious builds, top speed, sustained full throttle: 7th Gen Demon 7-wire WP
- Track racing and extreme power: GT Liquid-Cooled
